I Have a Little Bit of Inspiration for You Today
An insight into the thoughts of a group of older adults in the nursing home where I work.
In our weekly Creative Writer’s Group, the theme for our bit of writing this day was “I wish.....”. I asked each member of the group to come up with something they would like to wish for themselves, with no limits on the scope of their wishful thinking.
After a while, I realized that none of the wishes they expressed were for material things. It reinforced my belief that we live in a much more materialistic society now than the people who are now in their 80’s and 90’s and I found it very refreshing.
When they were young, playtime was not in front of computers or other technology. They spent a lot of time outdoors and socializing with friends and family. If they wanted something, they often had to do chores in order to earn the money to purchase it. Nothing came easy for many people in those days, but this instilled a value of possessions and caring for them that I believe is lacking in many people growing up today. If it comes to you too easily, you may not appreciate it as much as if you had to put in some effort to get it.
I would love you to take a little Time Out to read the wishes of our residents this day.
I wish there was peace in the world
I wish I was young again
I wish for good health
I wish for good warm weather
I wish it was Christmas
I wish I could fly
I wish I could drive a car
I wish I was still able to ride my bike
I wish for good luck for my family
I wish for a good night’s sleep
I wish it was snowing
I wish I was able to sing
I wish I could travel the world
I wish to live to be 100
I wish I had a cup of tea
I don’t wish for anything more...
