Spring, Creative Writing for Older Adults

Combining writing and art.

About this Activity

Acrostic Poem with an Artistic Frame.

In an acrostic poem, each letter of a word, in this case, the word SPRING, is the starting letter for a new word or phrase related to the original one. This is a fun exercise in creative writing for older adults. Color the border around the poem to finish your artwork.

For example, if I use the word FUN, I can make a poem that looks like this:

Falling about with laughter Unlimited joy No sadness today

Print the poetry page, and write a word or short sentence after each letter in SPRING. The words you write should all relate to springtime.

Then read it from top to bottom, and you have written a poem.

For Caregivers

Print the poems and give them to individuals to make by themselves or join them one-on-one.

For a group, either use a whiteboard and make a collaborative poem or ask each group member to make their own before coloring their borders.

The poems can be shared by reading aloud and look great displayed in your community.
