Make your painting session a social occasion. Add a cup of tea and chat about the different types of weather. Consider holding your painting session by the window so you can enjoy the view outside.

Encourage participants to create their own weather-related drawings as well as coloring in the printed weather pages. Encourage discussion about the weather throughout the session.

Early and mid-stage dementia

Ensure the person has everything they need, such as paints, brushes, and a coloring page. Stay nearby in case they need help.

If someone doesn’t want to join in straight away, place a brush and a page in front of them. Often, they will start to paint after watching others for a while. Even just watching can be enjoyable. They might also chat about the colors or where to put them.

If they still don’t want to start, gently try hand-over-hand painting—only if they are comfortable with it.
