Supply List:

  • Card paper to paint on
  • Pencil
  • Paints
  • Brush
  • Water for cleaning the brush between colors
  • Paper towels

Directions for Caregivers:

Watch the video together and make a landscape each.

This is a great activity for repeating, it will look different every time!

Painting the landscapes is a great social group activity.

Every time you do it, the landscape will look different, so the project is suitable for repeating.

You could make this landscape big! Tape a large piece of card paper to a wall and make it into a group project.

Early-stage memory care/dementia.

Use as described above and in the video. This is a good activity for all different ability levels. Drawing the landscape can be as simple as one or two lines dividing the sky and land.

Middle stage memory care/dementia.

Use as described above and in the video. Offer guidance as needed.

Late-stage memory care/dementia.

If the person can hold a brush and pen, you can work with him/her to guide him through each step. You can use hand-over-hand guidance if needed. It is also a nice activity to watch as a passive observer.

About this Activity

This Project is Perfect for Beginners in Painting and Art.

Drawing the landscape can be as simple as one or two lines dividing the sky and land.

If you feel more adventurous, draw in hills, fences, sheep, clouds, a sun, etc., to make it a more comprehensive art piece.

Another medium that is very suitable for use in this activity is water-color pencils. You color in with the pencils first. Then use a brush or your finger dipped in water to wet one area of color at a time. Remember to rinse out the brush between the different colors to not smudge into each other. The result will transform the picture into a water-color painting.
