Supply List:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 - 3 cups buttermilk.

Method:

Preheat oven. (See temperature below)

Mix all the dry ingredients first. Add buttermilk, starting with 2 cups and adding more if you need it. Stir until you have a consistency that will drop from the spoon if shaken.

Place the dough on a floured surface, knead lightly, shape into a round. Then flatten slightly and cut a deep x on it with a knife.

Bake in the oven.

200C or 400F for 10 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 190C or 375F for a further 50 min.

For those of you using a gas oven, this is gas mark 6, then gas mark 5 respectively.

When baked, cool on a wire rack. If you prefer a softer crust, wrap the baked bread in a clean tea towel until it has cooled.
