Diamonds are the hardest natural substance on earth. The only thing that can scratch a diamond is another diamond.

The modern association of one gem to each month, and the practice of wearing the stone in the form of a necklace or other jewelry item connected to the month of your birth, arose between the 16th and 18th centuries. For April, the birthstone is the diamond.

Diamonds are formed from carbon deep in the earth under extreme heat and pressure. They are ejected upwards toward the earth’s surface, where it is revealed by nature or mined by man.

Trading in diamonds started in India as early as four centuries B.C. with stones found in rivers and streams. These became fashionable accessories with the wealthier people in Europe in the 1400s. After that, Brazil emerged as an important resource, and in the late 1880s, South Africa and its diamond mines developed, dominated and controlled the diamond industry for many years.

Since the 1990s, diamonds have been discovered in many more countries and are still considered one of the world’s most valuable gemstones.

Diamonds are measured by carat weight. They must be cleaved and polished before they look like the diamonds we know.
