Rabbits in Folklore
Rabbits are some of the most multifaceted creatures in mythology.
In Korean and Japanese legends, they can be found living on the moon making rice cakes. They're symbols of fertility or rebirth - often associated with Easter as well as springtime through their incarnation as the "Easter Bunny."
But there's much more to this critter than meets the eye. It also exudes speed and agility (best illustrated by our pals, Energizer Bunny & Duracell). However, its reputation varies wildly depending on your location. While many regard mentioning a rabbit’s name brings good luck, others believe uttering its moniker invites distress among older islanders.
On the Isle of Portland in Dorset, UK, the rabbit is said to be unlucky. Even speaking the creature's name can cause upset among older island residents.
