Match the Numbers Worksheet

Printable Activity

Short Description:

In this number puzzle, there are pairs of matching numbers in the grid. Search carefully and cross off each pair as you find it. Take your time—there’s no rush!

When all the pairs are matched, you’ll be left with just one number. Use it to complete the equation, and write down your final answer.

Have fun and enjoy the challenge!

Directions for Caregivers:

Sit together at a table where the grid is easy to see. Explain the activity, pointing out that there are pairs of matching numbers to find and cross off. Work at their pace, encouraging them to scan the grid row by row. Offer support if needed, but let them take the lead in spotting pairs. Celebrate each match they find to keep the mood light and positive. When only one number remains, guide them to use it in the final equation and solve it together.

Hand out the same matching number grid to each participant, or display one large copy on a board or screen.

Introduce the game with enthusiasm, explaining that everyone will be searching for pairs of numbers. Encourage people to call out matches they find or work quietly, depending on the group’s style. You can work through the grid together step by step or let participants complete it at their own pace. Once most have found all the pairs, come back together to discuss the final leftover number and solve the equation as a group. It’s a great way to promote focus, shared problem-solving, and conversation.

Early-stage dementia activity

Begin by giving a calm, friendly explanation of the game, perhaps even reading it aloud together. Focus on keeping things simple—“Let’s look for two of the same number.” Point to a few numbers to get started, and use a pencil or finger to track across rows if needed. Gentle prompts like “Do you see another 7?” can help. If attention wanders, return to the task with encouragement and patience. Completing the final step—adding the leftover number to the equation—can offer a nice sense of closure and success.

Mid-stage dementia activity

Keep the session relaxed, no pressure. Sit beside the person and gently introduce the idea of matching numbers. Begin by pointing out a clear pair and crossing them off together. Use short, simple instructions and visual cues like circling or highlighting numbers. Allow plenty of time, and offer positive reinforcement with each step. If they lose focus, gently guide them back or simply enjoy the process without needing to finish. Completing even part of the activity can bring a sense of accomplishment, and the game can be paused or revisited at any time.

Number Dice Game – “Roll & Add”
After the match the numbers game, you might like to do a fun interactive dice activity. Give the person one or two large dice (foam ones work well). Ask them to roll the dice and then add the numbers together. You can record the totals on a simple score sheet or just talk through them together. If you want to make it competitive, keep scores and see who can get the highest or lowest score in a set number of throws.

Alternative ways to use the dice:

  • Ask, “Can you roll a 10?” and let them keep rolling until they do.
  • Or use a printed number line to place a marker on each total they roll.

This activity keeps the brain active with basic addition, supports hand movement, and can lead to fun conversation. It's easy to adapt and doesn’t need to be competitive—just fun and rewarding.
