Painted Landscape Picture

Maria and Sheila paint simple landscapes.

This project is perfect for beginners at painting and for art in dementia / memory care settings.

Supply list:

  • Card paper to paint on
  • Pencil
  • Paints
  • Brush
  • Water for cleaning the brush between colors
  • Paper towels

Another medium which is very suitable for use in this activity is water-color pencils. You color in with the pencils, and then use a brush or your finger to wet your work. Do remember to rinse out the brush between the different colors so that they don't smudge into each other. The end result transforms the picture into a water-color painting

This is a good activity for all different ability levels. When doing dementia art / memory care art, drawing the landscape can be as simple as one or two lines dividing the sky and land.

For the more adventurous individuals, drawing in hills, fences, sheep, clouds, a sun etc can make it into a more comprehensive piece of art.

You could also make this landscape really big. Tape a large piece of card paper to a wall and make it into a group project. Every time you do this the landscape will look different so the project is good for repeating.

How you might use this activity:

For Individuals (independent persons), use as described above and in the video.

Or

Along with a caregiver / activity director for the following:

One-on-one activity, use as described above and in the video.

Group activity, use as described above and in the video. This is a great social group activity.

Early stage memory care / dementia, use as described above and in the video.

Middle stage memory care / dementia, use as described above and in the video. Offer guidance as needed.

Late stage memory care / dementia, if the person is able to hold a brush and pen you can work with him/her to guide through each step. You can use hand over hand guidance if needed. It is also a nice activity to watch as a passive observer.

This activity is suitable for both men and women.
